An Application
When God's work begins, so does the opposition (ACT 6:8-9). EZR 4:2 was clearly an attempt to trick God's people and sabotage the work. Z, J, and the elders were wise to reject that help. Jesus could've said JN 8:44 to them. How often do we today fail to make this important distinction? Compare 2CO 6:14-16 and JAM 4:4.
Connect the Dots
Compare EZR 3:11 to PS 106:1, 107:1, 118:1, 118:29, 136:1, and 1CH 16:34. / In EZR 4:5, the overt discouragement began under Cyrus and continued under Xerxes, Artaxerxes, and then Darius II. / When the angel described Joshua as "a stick snatched from the fire" (ZEC 3:2) he
may
have been referring at least in part to the super stressful situations described in EZR 3:3 & 4:4-5.
